Jacobus Roelof Hoogezand Traditional Vernacular Armchair in Solid Oak The Netherlands 1930s

€1,650.00

This is a high quality traditional vernacular French or provincial armchair with a few modern(ist) touches made by the Dutch cabinetmaker J. R. Hoogezand (1885-1966).

Although it looks like an antique farmers chair from the 18th or 19th century, this really is a 1930s piece. It is wonderfully executed in solid oak. It is littered with great little details like the curly armrests, the wide standing feet and the carved details on the top of the backrest. Overall it is a great 1930s and early modernist adaption of a wide spread antique vernacular farmers armchair.

Located at Oud Kerkhof 25 in the Dutch city of Utrecht, the J.R. Hoogezand company opened its doors on February 8, 1930, initially offering "magazijnen ter complete meubileering" or ‘complete home furnishings’. The business specialized in the sale of small and larger furniture items, alongside functioning as a furniture maker and an upholsterer for homes and furniture. They were a recognized high-end atelier dedicated to interior design and craftsmanship. We can date this armchair to the 1930s due to the name of the company stated on the label underneath, because later on they changed names to J.R. Hoogezand v/h B. Middelbeek Meubileering en J.R. Hoogezand Ateliers voor Binnenhuiskunst.

The chair comes in a very good condition with slight traces of age and use. Signed underneath.

Dimensions: W. 65 x H. 126 x D. 62 SH. 45.5 cm
